Now, let’s dive in
For a moment, Cole gripped the steering wheel, his knuckles white, his breathing coming in sharp, uneven bursts. His foot hovered over the gas pedal, but he didn’t start the engine. Maya could sense the war raging inside him—the part that wanted to turn the truck around and hunt Connors down versus the part barely holding onto control.
Maya swallowed, her fingers twisting together in her lap. “You’re angry,” she said quietly, her voice barely above a whisper. “Because of Connors?”
Cole’s hands flexed on the wheel. “Yeah,” he ground out. “I’m angry because either that son of a bitch is dirty, or he’s so incompetent that he’s dangerous—and both options put you at risk.” His gaze flicked toward her, and something dark and feral flashed in his eyes. “And I swear to God, Maya, if Connors is involved in any way with what happened to Kyle—and tries to make you his scapegoat—I’ll bury him myself.”
Maya believed him. Every single word. She could hear the raw, unfiltered intensity in his voice, sending a shiver down her spine.
Her heart pounded against her ribcage, the fear she’d been trying to suppress clawing its way back up. “If Connors really is dirty… if he’s willing to lie or cover something up… that means he wouldn’t hesitate to come after me, right?” Her voice wavered. “To protect himself?” She could feel hysteria trying to surface.
Cole’s hands left the wheel, fists curling against his thighs, his entire body vibrating with tension. “He won’t touch you,” he said, his voice a low growl. “Not while I’m breathing.”
Cole’s promise reassured her, even it didn’t stop the cold terror slithering through her veins. “But what if—”
“Maya.” Cole turned toward her, his knee knocking into the console as his blue-gray eyes locked onto hers. They were lit with a fire—the kind that comes from a man running purely on adrenaline, fueled by protectiveness and something even more dangerous—something personal. If Maya didn’t know better, she might say it was love, but that wasn’t possible. “I mean it. You’re not alone in this. I don’t care how tangled up Connors is in this mess—you’re not his pawn. You’re not his scapegoat, and I will not let him throw you under the bus to save his own sorry ass.”
I’d love to hear what you think!
